Pansexuality, the | pansexual (adj.)

The term "pan" derives from Greek, meaning "everything". Pansexuality is a sexual orientation where a person can experience romantic and/or sexual attraction towards individuals, irrespective of their sex or gender. In other words, pansexual individuals can feel attracted to all gender identities. It is one of the polysexual orientations.

Pansexuality has been a term since the 1960s, however, some people still believe that it is just a passing trend. Nonetheless, there have always been people who do not consider gender as a factor in their romantic and sexual relationships, even before the 1960s. Another prejudice against pansexual people is the idea that they are immediately attracted to all people (Echte Vielfalt, 2022). Just like people of all other sexual orientations, there are attractive and unattractive traits and characteristics for pansexual people, but these are not related to gender identity.

It can be confusing to distinguish between pansexuality and bisexuality because both terms refer to a desire for multiple genders. However, the difference lies in that pansexuality implies a desire for all genders, whereas bisexuality refers to a desire for at least two genders. The choice of which term to use depends on each person's individual experience and understanding of their sexuality. Some people also use both terms to describe themselves. (Echte Vielfalt 2022)

Like any other sexual orientation, pansexuality is diverse and is experienced and lived out individually.
